Matthew 5:3 says: "Blessed are the poor in spirit" and one more: Psalm 33:19 "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart: and he will save the humble of spirit."

I wonder how you can say of a person if he is "poor in spirit". How does this quality show off?

Regarding "poor in spirit":

  • Contemporary English Version Bible: people who depend only on Him.
  • Today English Version Bible: they know they are spiritually poor.

It is important to consider when Jesus teach or preach that sermon (Mat 5 Sermon at the hill), people distracted with financial and politics. And more than that, they did not have a true teacher, but hypocrite pharisees and high priest. People need to be "poor in spirit" in that situation and condition, and also in our today life.

Thanks for you share, That, I think, is true) But my thoughts were: can one really say that he/she ALWAYS depend on God? I mean, we learn something during our spiritual growth, we get to know how to deal with certain situations and that is, I believe, what God intends us to become - mature. Or not? If, for example, I feel that I know what to do in such and such situation, does that mean that I am not being "poor in spirit"?

I think that those who are poor in spirit, realize their need for God, and seek His Kingdom.

It is better to discern this quality in ourselves, rather then in others.

I don't think that knowledge of what to do in some situation makes us spiritually rich.

Perhaps rich in knowledge, maybe even wisdom, and all of this from God's richness.

But our need for God, the source of it all, remains.

Apart from Christ, we can do nothing.

Grace and Peace,

Glen

Thank you, Glen! Can I verify that I understood you correctly? Do you mean that in all situations, even if I know what to do, I should ask God to show me the right, or His way to deal with this situation? And more, if I don't know - I should go to God for help?

I think it is wise to consider God's will in every choice that we make.

What I am saying is that you don't sacrifice being "spiritually poor" by being mature, as you have described it.

This, being "poor in spirit", as I understand it, means you recognize your need for God, and his salvation.

If you already know the best way to deal with a situation, then you have wisdom in that regard.

But you realize that this wisdom is from God.  It is His gift to you. It has it's origin in God. It is God who is rich is Spirit.

Without His generousity, we have nothing.  We are poor in spirit.  Thus we seek his Kingdom and find it.

Iuchik, I agree that God wants us to become mature, but does not mean we satisfied, feel enough or do not want to learn anymore, and even so proud. God and His Word are perfect that is why we still have something to learn and grow. Smile
